World’s Longest Cruise Finally Sets Sail from Belfast
After months of waiting, passengers of the Villa Vie Residences’ Odyssey are finally setting sail from Belfast on a monumental three-and-a-half-year voyage around the world! Originally scheduled to depart in May, the cruise was delayed for unexpected rudder and gearbox repairs, leaving travellers stranded in the Northern Irish capital. But as of Monday, the ship has received the all-clear and is ready to embark on its epic journey.
The Ultimate Voyage – 1,301 Days, 7 Continents, and 425 Ports
The Odyssey, touted as the world’s first continual cruise, will visit all seven continents and stop at 425 breathtaking ports, (including Lisbon, Rio de Janeiro and Singapore) in 147 countries on seven continents. Equipped with top-tier amenities such as restaurants, a spa, pool, a business center, and medical facilities, this floating city has everything passengers need for life at sea.
Delays Didn’t Dampen Spirits
Despite the months-long delay, passengers have kept their spirits high. Canadian couple John and Monica Frim, celebrating their 50th anniversary on board, have remained optimistic. “We’re not happy about the delay,” Monica admitted, “but in a three-and-a-half-year journey, what’s four months?”
The cruise line provided accommodations in Belfast and across Europe for stranded passengers, allowing them to explore the city during their extended stay. For some, like retired American Holly Hennessy, Belfast became a cherished stop on their global adventure. “I will always have a fond place in my heart for Belfast,” she said, reflecting on the unique experiences the city offered.
Love Stories at Sea
For others, the delay sparked more than just wanderlust. Canadian Gian Perroni and American Angela Harsanyi met while staying at a Belfast hotel and recently announced their engagement. “We’re getting married between the Panama Canal and Costa Rica,” Harsanyi shared excitedly, proving that love truly knows no boundaries—even at sea.
The Ship as Home
Some passengers are so captivated by the idea of life on the open sea that they plan to stay aboard for good. Melody and John Hennessee from the U.S. have decided to make the Odyssey their permanent home, cruising the world for the rest of their lives.
As the Odyssey sets sail at last, it’s clear that for many, this voyage is more than just a cruise—it’s a new chapter filled with adventure, discovery, and even a little romance.
