The study ranked English villages on their history, architecture, location, online popularity and even TikTok fame, before naming a winner. Bourton-on-the-Water came out on top thanks to its nearly 400 listed buildings, ancient origins (people have lived here since around 4000BC), and stunning setting in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Second place went to Castle Combe in Wiltshire, famed for its single picturesque street, while Clovelly in Devon — where whitewashed cottages tumble down a 400-foot cliff to the harbour — rounded out the top three.

So if you’re still looking for a late-summer getaway, why not skip the airports and head to one of England’s most charming villages instead?
