Electronic travel visas for UK visitors - BookitList

Big change for UK visitors starting January 8, 2025

Travelers from non-EU countries who don't need a visa to enter the UK will now need to complete pre-travel authorization from January 8, 2025. The new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, similar to the US ESTA, aims to enhance security checks before travelers begin their journey. This new requirement is part of the UK's efforts to digitize its border and immigration system, ensuring a smoother travel experience while maintaining robust security measures.

ETA Application Process

The ETA, which stands for Electronic Travel Authorization, is a digital registration scheme that pre-clears travelers for entry to the UK. The cost for obtaining an ETA is a non-refundable £10 (approximately $12.50), and travelers can apply through the official app or directly online. The apps for iPhone and Android boast quicker processing times, often completing applications within 10 minutes.

From January 8, travelers from 48 countries, including the US, Canada, and Australia, will need an ETA to enter the UK. This scheme was first introduced to Gulf Cooperation Council nationals in 2024 and is now being rolled out to other non-European travelers. EU citizens will need an ETA to enter the UK starting April 2, 2025.

Travelers must upload a photo of their passport, scan and photograph themselves during the application process, and answer various questions about their travel plans. The application process takes around 20 minutes and must be completed in one go. Decisions are typically given within three days, although it could take longer in some cases.

The ETA is valid for two years and allows multiple entries for short stays of up to six months. However, note that it will be digitally linked to the traveler's passport, so if a new passport is obtained during the two-year period, a new ETA application is required.

Transit passengers and ETA

Even passengers transiting through the UK will need an ETA, similar to the US ESTA requirements. This means that travelers making a quick onward connection through UK airports, like Heathrow, must have an ETA to pass through passport control to the transit area.

It is important to note that having an ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK. Travelers must still go through passport control, where Border Force officials have the final say on entry into the country.
