A New Geothermal Lagoon Is Coming to Iceland – And We’re Obsessed!
Set to open in summer 2025 in the village of Laugarás, southwest Iceland, the new Laugarás Lagoon promises a serene escape that blends nature, relaxation, and Icelandic culinary craft into one stunning destination. Developed by Mannverk, the 1,000-square-metre geothermal site will feature warm, mineral-rich waters, forest views, and tiered pools cascading around a dramatic 6.6-metre waterfall — believed to be the first of its kind in the country!
It’s the latest addition to Iceland’s growing roster of geothermal escapes – and while the Blue Lagoon, the country’s most iconic (and also man-made) soak spot, still draws the crowds, Laugarás promises a more tranquil, off-the-beaten-path alternative.
Developed by Mannverk, the 1,000-square-metre site will feature a tiered lagoon centred around a 6.6-metre waterfall – believed to be the first of its kind in Iceland. Water will be kept at a soothing 38–40°C, with two saunas, a cold plunge pool, a quiet grotto, and swim-up bars adding to the wellness mix.

Designed by Tark Architects and Efla Engineers, the lagoon uses glass walls and local wood to connect the interior with the surrounding landscape. Minimalist interiors and subtle lighting by designer Anthony Bacigalupo create a calming atmosphere, perfect for spotting the Northern Lights in the darker months.

Just 94 km from Reykjavík and near the iconic Geysir hot spring and Gullfoss waterfall, it’s ideally placed for visitors travelling the Golden Circle route.
The on-site restaurant, Ylja, will be helmed by Gísli Matt, the chef behind Slippurinn. Expect seasonal Icelandic ingredients like wild herbs, berries, seaweed, and sustainably sourced fish, with traditional preservation methods and open-fire cooking playing a central role.
