Watch: German surfer breaks world record for the biggest wave ever surfed

German surfer Sebastian Steudtner has made history, breaking the Guinness World Record for the biggest wave ever surfed!

The 37-year old took on the 86-foot high wave at the Praia do Norte beach in Nazaré, Portugal back in October 2020. However, despite considerable technological progress, wave measurement remains a painstaking process and it wasn't until earlier this week when The World Surf League and a team of scientists, along with Guinness World Records, revealed his record-breaking achievement.

The previous record was held by Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa, who surfed an 80-foot high wave in the same location three years earlier.

Located on Portugal's western coastline, about 75 miles north of Lisbon, Praia do Norte is no stranger to massive waves thanks largely to the 170 km long and 5 km deep Nazaré Canyon, which pushes the swell from the Atlantic Ocean towards the coast.

Steudtner, the only German who surfs big waves professionally, said that being out on the water 'sets him free', and that growing up in a country not normally associated with the sport didn't stop him from chasing his dreams.
