Visit an ancient Mayan city

Dating back to the 1st century, Tikal is the largest excavated Mayan city in the world

This is home to an array of remarkably well-preserved structures including the iconic Temple IV, one of the tallest Mayan pyramids in existence.

Shuttle buses run several times a day from the nearby town of Flores, the first of which sets out at 3.30 am, and arrives in time for sunset, when the city is at its most beautiful. Guatemala is also home to a number of other excellently preserved Mayan ruins, including the nearby city of Yaxhá, and Zaculeu, which translates as ‘White Earth’ in the local Mam Mayan dialect, due to its stunning, white stone structures.

Cross a crater lake by boat

The vast crater lake of Atitlan in the Southern Sierra Madre mountain range is truly spectacular

Beautifully fringed by looming volcanoes, jungles and small, indigenous villages. The nearby town of Panajachel is home to a number of tour operators including Atitlan Adventure Tours, who offer boat and kayak trips around the lake, whilst local operators in Chichicastenango or Antigua also arrange day trips to the area.

Visit a coffee plantation

Guatemala is renowned for producing some of the finest coffee beans in the world, and the industry is central to the country’s economy.

The coffee industry is central to the country’s economy, accounting for around 40% of its total agricultural export revenue. There are a number of coffee growing regions in the country, including on the fringes of Antigua city; a number of local operators run coffee plantation tours, De La Gente, are one of the best.

Swim in natural turquoise pools

Semuc Champey is a network of natural limestone pools, caves and waterfalls set in a remote valley amongst the forested mountains of Alta Verapaz.

Renowned for their stunning, turquoise waters, they are great for swimming, and are located around 10KM from the town of Lanquin.

Shop at an artisanal market

Indigenous groups in Guatemala have a long and proud tradition of hand-making artisanal crafts and textiles.

Every On Thursdays and Sundays, Chichicastenango is home to the largest and one of the most renowned craft markets in Latin America, which features hundreds of stalls selling beautiful pottery, textiles, crafts, and much more.

Sololá Market, held on Tuesday and Friday mornings in a small village on the banks of Lake Atitlan, is also an excellent choice.

Hike up a volcano

Volcan Acatenango is situated near the city of Antigua, and is one of the most beautiful of the country's numerous volcanoes.

Its near 400M high summit offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes, including the nearby Volcan Fuego, which has been erupting almost constantly for hundreds of years. There are a number of operators who offer group treks up the volcano, including Trek Guatemala, who run nighttime hikes offering breathtaking views of bubbling lava, and picturesque sunrises.
