When you look around after winter has lifted, everybody seems to have a spring in their step. Often holidays at this time are people's first trip of the year and a chance to get away. The weather isn't as hot as in summer but you can usually expect some sunshine, without places being quite as busy as in summer too.

You can also benefit when travelling in spring from cheaper holidays, with flights and hotels being less of a premium. As well as all of the above 'functional' reasons to enjoy a spring holiday though, our main reason for enjoying an adventure at this time of year is the beauty of Spring. Cities and rural places come alive with rainbows of colour, flowers are blooming and a vibrant feeling that feels overdue after winter is buzzing.

Bergen, Norway

During the months of March, April and May the temperature warms and the winter snow melts, allowing natural waterfalls to break out and the beauty of Norway to blossom. Norway’s long coastline is bustling with life this time of year, and the migratory birds that fled in autumn have returned home to breed and enjoy the warmer seasons.

After many months in the cold, Norwegians pour out of their homes to make the most of the spring season. The pavements begin to fill with smiles and the first sip of “utepils” (outdoor beer) of the year begins to flow.

Cherry blossom in Japan

Many Japanese people regard spring as their favourite season, and with good reason!

Undeniably, cherry blossoms are the best things to see in Japan. However the queen of spring fruits in Japan is strawberries. Strawberry picking is a popular spring activity in Japan. You should definitely visit at least one of the premium strawberry buffets in town!. Cycling is one of the best ways to explore the country, the weather in spring is perfect for cyclists and sightseeing in general.

Keukenhof, Netherlands

Also known as the Garden of Europe, is one of the world's largest flower gardens, in The Netherlands.

Keukenhof is a park where more than 7 million flower bulbs are planted every year. Gardens and four pavilions show a fantastic collection of: tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, orchids, roses, carnations, irises, lilies and many other flowers. You will be overwhelmed by a spectacle of colors and perfumes. The main attraction of Keukenhof is obviously the flowers but the park is truly a destination for visitors of all ages.

Bodrum, Turkey

It is a pleasant time of year there when you can wander the town before the summer hordes arrive :)

But depending how brave you are - still be too cold to swim. All of the flowers are blooming; the vegetables are coming into season (think artichokes, asparagus. wild greens) and the business owners are not yet jaded with many tourist requests. If you get chance make sure to visit the Bodrum Amphitheater to to grasp a sense of history.

Chefchaouen, Morocco

March is an excellent time to be planning a trip to Morocco. Temperatures grow warmer during the day, but are generally tolerable in most places.

Chefchaouen is a small city in the Rif mountains in the north-west of Morocco. This quirky town is probably one of the prettiest I’ve seen in Morocco because of its blue-washed streets and buildings. That’s why it got nicknamed “the Blue Pearl of Morocco”.

After a long day trekking or site seeing, why not try traditional Moroccon cuisine. An excellent choice is Aladdin Restaurant.

Suited to its name, the restaurant has a romantic and enchanting feel which really complements the terrific food.

Farne Northumberland

Taking young children on a bird-watching boat trip might not spring instantly to mind. If you’re in Northumberland between April and July though, it really ought to.

Wildlife is the main draw on the Farne Islands, which are most famous for puffins and seals plus many other species. If you delay your spring trip till April you will definitely see the puffins. NOTE The Farne Islands are open to visitors from 28th March to the 1st Nov.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Visit Thailand in spring and you’ll find yourself squarely in the hot season. April 13th is Thai new year and it could be a fun and cultural experience.

If you’ve ever wanted to soar above the skies in a hot air balloon, Thailand International Balloon Festival could be ideal, generally held in March.

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Late April is the perfect time to visit Uyuni, as you can expect to see both the dry salt desert and the giant mirror effect.

The lack of wind and clear skies create the perfect conditions for achieving images that appear to lose all perspective. For the best of both worlds, visit in late March or late November. You might get lucky and find a part of the salt flat that is dry and a part that's covered in water!

Northern Lights in Iceland

For those hoping to catch the Northern Lights make a visit in March or early April. During the spring months the waterfalls are at their most powerful as the snow melts rush the waterfalls full of water increasing the speed and volume. All that extra water flow makes for an impressive sight to be seen.
