Although it wasn’t officially invented until the 1800s, Polo is thought to be one of the world’s oldest known team sports, estimated to date back as early as the 6th century.
Whilst today it is played in nearly 100 countries worldwide, from the US to Singapore, many of whom host annual tournaments and events, which attract tens of thousands of visitors from across the globe.
There is no set length of time for a polo match, though they usually last between one and two hours long and are made up of seven and a half minute long periods known as ‘Chukkers’.
The objective of the game is to carry the ball the down field trying to score through the goalposts. After each goal the team swap sides, this makes it fair as weather conditions are compensated for.
