How Difficult Is the Welsh 3000s Challenge?
The Welsh 3000s Challenge is one of the most iconic mountain tests in the Welsh mountains, taking on all of Wales’ peaks over 3,000 feet (15 summits) in a single 24-hour push through Snowdonia
It’s undeniably tough, but it’s not reserved for elite mountaineers. Every year, plenty of determined amateurs complete this classic hiking adventure; with smart training, the right kit, and a solid plan, you could be next.
Just how difficult is the Welsh 3000s?
All fifteen peaks sit close together in northwest Wales within Snowdonia (Eryri) National Park, which helps make the Welsh 3000s logistically achievable there’s no driving between mountains, just continuous hiking in North Wales from range to range across some of the most dramatic Welsh mountains.
The difficulty comes from the sustained effort and mountain conditions: a very long day on steep, rocky terrain with major elevation gain (often around 4,000m), fatigue that compounds as the hours pass, and classic Snowdonia weather that can change fast. With solid preparation, the right kit, a realistic pacing plan, and ideally an experienced guide, many determined amateurs complete this iconic hiking adventure every year.
What level of fitness will I need for the Welsh 3000s?
The Welsh 3000s Challenge is achievable, but it’s a serious fitness challenge and shouldn’t be underestimated. You’re looking at roughly 50km of hiking in Wales (UK) with close to 4,000m of ascent in Snowdonia, plus steep climbs, long descents, and plenty of uneven, rocky ground across the Welsh mountains.
On top of the distance and elevation, conditions in North Wales can make things feel significantly harder. Weather can change quickly, and wind, rain, or low cloud can slow progress and increase the mental effort required to stay focused and keep moving efficiently.
It’s best suited to fairly seasoned hikers who can maintain a steady mountain pace for many hours and feel comfortable with exposure and heights; as a simple benchmark, if you can complete a half marathon in under two hours, you’re likely in the right ballpark.
