Itinerary

5 Large

Pen-y-Ghent

The first peak we’ll tackle is Pen-y-Ghent (694m), famous for its distinctive profile. From the summit, we’ll take in sweeping views across the rugged Yorkshire Dales often spotting our next objectives in the distance: Whernside and Ingleborough.

6 Large

Whernside

Our second peak of the day is Whernside (736m), the highest of the Yorkshire Three Peaks. On the long, steady climb, we’ll pass verdant valleys and tumbling waterfalls before reaching the summit for wide-open views across the Dales and, on a clear day, all the way to the Lake District and Morecambe Bay.

Ingleborough

Our final challenge of the day is Ingleborough (723m), a striking peak sometimes called the “Hollow Mountain” thanks to the vast network of caves beneath it. From the summit, we’ll soak up the breathtaking views and that unbeatable surge of pride as we complete the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.

Victory meal

After making our way back to Ribblehead, we’ll head to a traditional local pub for a well-earned victory meal and a couple of beers before we set off for home ideally with our medals still intact.

Lead Guide

Faq?

It’s around 24 miles (38.6km) with significant ascent, and the classic target time is 12 hours.

You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable with long hikes and sustained climbs. Training walks (especially on hills) are strongly recommended.

A common order is Pen-y-Ghent → Whernside → Ingleborough, but the exact route can vary depending on conditions.

It can be, if you’ve done day hikes before and train up. If you’re brand new to hiking, start with shorter hill walks first and build up.
